Wakulla Archery Club

The Start of Wakulla Archery Club
By George Weymouth

In the summer of 1987 while working at the Tri-County Firearms sporting goods store in Crawfordville, (owned by Carol & David Redwine). David, a friend of mine Steve Martin (who would handle legal affairs), and I, started up the Wakulla Archery Club. A gentleman by the name of Leo Crownan had a pizza place just up Highway 319 from Crawfordville. It was decided to use property just west of the pizza restaurant to put up our range of about 30 acres, it was owned by the former Judge Flack (as I recall).

We held a formal meeting to raise interest in the club at the Wakulla County Livestock Pavilion building, and had about 25 people show up. To start with, we had a local biologist, Neal Eicholz give a talk on wild turkeys. Mostly hunters showed up, but also a few ladies, and some youth as well. We voted in Officers and soon had a work party building the target stands of stacked insulation board, (some of which still stand on our present range), tree stands, trails, signs, and bow hanging racks, also had to be built. All our gear was stored in a garage next to Leo Crownans Pizza joint.

The range was beautiful. We for instance had about 6 sinks or extreme wet weather/ temporary ponds surrounded by live oaks. The rest was mature pines, many still bearing turpentine slash scars on their sides, and many of the old turpentine collecting pans were still lying about. We had the range for about 3 years when (powers above us) it was decided to lumbar out the pines. The beauty of the range was shattered, and soon we began to look for another range with a more stable future, which Mr. Farmer and his family have provided for us at our present range.
